It’s the First Day of Summer

And we’re off! The second session of our 96th camping season is underway, and we can already feel the positive energy. I just finished a lap around camp where I saw new-to-camp Swampers and Loggers learning the ropes of box hockey. In the Axeman Village our seventh graders enjoyed their first-day-of-camp snack: cookies and bug juice while they hit ping pong balls and lined up for Rinde ball (what we call roof ball). Down in the Lumberjack Village the picnic tables scattered throughout the Village’s waterfront property were already alive, hosting games of Euchre and Cribbage. I know we’ve only been at it for a couple hours, but Camp is really feeling like CAMP. Around our community our second-four-weekers are getting acquainted or re-acquainted with life at Nebagamon, making friends, playing games, and starting to get settled in their home away from home.

Our eight weekers are doing great too! They’ve been excellent greeters of our new campers. After a super fun changeover complete with an all-camp cruiser day, and a field trip to Pattison Park and a waterpark in Duluth, they were all ready to kick the second session off today.

I’ve always felt that the beginning of second session is like an infusion of positive energy into our community. While we’re coming off of a month of camp already, for our new campers, today is day one! As they jumped off the buses that first-day excitement jumped off with them… they just seemed so excited to finally be here! Sure, there’s been a little homesickness today; that’s expected. But as always, our counselors were ready to support the campers who needed it, and, as always, we’ll be sure to reach out if your camper has needed some extra support during this early adjustment period.

So…LET THIS SERVE AS YOUR NOTICE THAT ALL OF THE BOYS THAT WERE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE TODAY HAVE DONE SO AND ARE SAFELY AT CAMP…

And with that, second session is already off to a fantastic start.

Momentarily we’ll all gather in the Rec Hall for our first meal together of the session – spaghetti marinara, and cake for dessert. After dinner campers will head back to their cabins to unpack and get settled, a process that we call “nesting.” Once everyone is nice and nested they’ll have a conversation with their counselors and cabin group about their expectations for the summer, what they want their summer to be like and how they can all work together to make that happen.

We share these updates every-other-day, and, as you know, you are always welcome to reach out. Just call the camp office at 715-374-2275.

All is well in the Northwoods!
