Camp Nebagamon is hallowed ground to thousands of campers who have been coming here since 1929. Located in northwestern Wisconsin, not far from the shores of Lake Superior in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, Camp Nebagamon is a traditional boys residential summer camp. Our youngest campers have completed the third grade, and the oldest have finished their freshman year of high school. Campers and staff hail from states all over the nation as well as international destinations. We have approximately 230 campers and 130 staff members, and we offer four- or eight-week sessions.
Philosophy
At Camp Nebagamon, we create a refuge from the real world structured to foster and nurture a boy’s development. Through a tremendous level of daily choice, boys are free to explore different talents, interests, and sides of their personalities. Our goal at Nebagamon is NOT to determine who is the best athlete or canoeist or artist…rather, our goal for every camper is that he enjoys participating, learn skills, achieves competency, and feels a sense of accomplishment. Through extensive wilderness tripping options, we strive to engender a love of the outdoors in our campers and challenge boys in ways that help them discover how capable they are.
Culture
In addition to our campers having fun while at camp, we want them to take away something more from their experience with us. “This Shall Be A Place of Welcome for All” hangs on a sign outside our main lodge and is our guiding principle. The importance of tolerance, respect, sportsmanship, and reverence for the environment are emphasized. We view ourselves as educators and train all our staff members to serve as mentors for our campers. We oftentimes refer to the “camp family.” There are literally thousands of current and former campers and staff members around the world who include themselves as part of this community. Many of these people keep Nebagamon in their hearts as a place that made a significant impact upon their lives.
History
Camp Nebagamon is steeped in the traditions, songs, and culture originated by its founders, Muggs and Janet Lorber of St. Louis, back in 1929. Forty-four campers attended Camp Nebagamon that first summer on the 75-acre site where camp sits today. The original idea of providing a complete Northwoods experience for boys from throughout the country remains as relevant today as nearly a century ago. In its nearly 90 years of history, Camp Nebagamon has had four sets of owner-directors.
