The backbone of any successful summer camp program is its staff. At Nebagamon we take pride in the approximately 120 men and women who guide and supervise our campers. Our administrative staff includes Associate Directors Adam Fornear and Emily Jodock (both year-round employees), four village directors, a program director, head and assistant wilderness trip directors, and two waterfront directors. Two counselors live in each of our 27 cabins and teach in our program areas. We also have program specialists (non-cabin staff) in art, campcraft, cooking, nature, photography, riflery, and sailing. A separate group of 20 individuals comprise our wilderness trip staff. In our health center we have a rotating team of doctors, a nurse, and two nurse's aides. Our food service manager guides a staff of twelve, and our maintenance staff includes two year-round caretakers and a third person during the camping season.
Approximately 70 percent of our staff is made up of returning counselors or former campers. It is not uncommon for us to have at least 20 staff members with over 10 years experience at camp. However, we also like to have staff members new to Nebagamon because they provide fresh ideas and different perspectives. Our staff is sprinkled with international counselors from places like England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Denmark, and Mexico.
All staff applicants have personal interviews, must submit three references even if they are former campers, and undergo extensive background checks. Our Staff Orientation week focuses on a range of issues such as child development, communication and leadership skills, discipline, first aid, camp policies and procedures, and ways to meet the needs of each individual in our camp community. If you would like more information about our staff, go to our FAQ section for parents.
